18 March 2007... We got together to exercise our brains. Yes, other than playing and eating (as you have observed from most of our postings), the PathMakers are very brainy people too!

Boggle! How many words can you find from the letters on the screen? Just look at the intense looks on our faces and you know how hard we're using our brains!

21 January 2007 marks the transition of leadership for PathMakers. We thanked Pastor Jabez who has been with us faithfully for the past 2+ years and welcomed Pastor Kee Oon on board

Pastor Kee Oon shared with us his vision for PathMakers

Why the need to be a PathMaker?
Young Adults are at a point in their lives where we’re forming an adult life structure. We have left school and started earning a real pay. Some of the questions that we may have in our minds are

~How do I spend my money?
~Where should I eat and shop? What sort of lifestyle should I adopt?
~Why can’t I meet my boss’ expectations?

Answers to these questions can come from
~The media
~Our bosses and colleagues

which are offering us attractive, alternate lifestyles.

Hence, as Christian young adults, we need to be PathMakers because

PathMakers make trends,
and don't follow aimlessly (Definition of a PathMaker)

We need to be deliberate about choosing the lifestyle we want to lead. We must not follow aimlessly, but make godly paths for ourselves and others to follow!

The key areas that will be addressed in PathMakers are
~Career Paths
~Life Partner
~Lifestyles

and these will be addressed through
~Care Groups
~Monthly PathMakers event

Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Pastor Kee Oon also encouraged us with Psalm 25:4-5 to ask God to show us the paths that we should make. In that way, we’ll be true PathMakers for God.

It was a colourful afternoon for PathMakers. Ms Hannie Hay from Jill Lowe International shared with us tips and tricks on dressing and styling. Let me share with you some…

The story of Linda and Lindy. The power of hair style. Side parting makes you look softer and more approachable, and hence those in service side should keep side partings.

The power of dressing. There is a banker, musician&playboy and a tuition teacher in the photo. Can you tell who is who?

Black only looks good on very few people.

And we learnt that there are 4 types of people – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. And people from each season has different colours that suit them.

Fang Ting is Autumn, and Ju Lee is Spring!

Pak Shun is Spring too! Looks like he’s in the wrong colour…

So, should we throw away all our “wrong colour” clothes? NO! According to Hannie, some “wrong colours” make you look pale and dull. They’re good when you need an MC. If you wear the “right colour” to the doctor, you’ll look radiant. “You don’t need and MC”, the doctor would say, “You just need Vitamin C.”

P/S: the colour of the title tells you that i'm an autumn... guess who??? :)

GAME: Find out the secret route to the other end! If you step into the wrong square, to the left or to the right, you need to start all over again!
PRINCIPLE LEARNT: "Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left...." Deuteronomy 28:14

GAME: Every team member is handicapped in some way. Work together to accomplish your given task!
PRINCIPLE LEARNT: "The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" ......But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other......Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." ....1 Corinthians 12

A journal entry by a young adult:

On 11th June, we had our Young Adults Hanging Out event-bearing testimony to the fact that the Young Adults initiative and commitment to meet up monthly is gaining momentum and is here to stay!

Today's Amazing Race was part of a series activities for us to bond with people from other CGs and also to invite our non-christian friends and relatives to have a peek at what they are missing out on. Two weeks of painstaking planning and preparation was tested in the crucible of reality and, as it turned out, God blessed us with sheets of refreshing June showers and a load of fun! :)

Groups of us ran around with umbrellas to the far corners of the realm of Woodlands. A quirky mixture of mind bending games, bible quizzes, hunting for obscure signboards, locating ATM machines, counting strange looking vegetables made it an experience that was enriching for all.

Sure goes to show there is no lack of competitive spirit in YA ministry. Looking forward to the next one already. Yay!

lifelong Christian development

due to some unforeseen technical circumstances, the photos just can't seem to be loaded. many apologies! :(

On 21st May afternoon, about 40 young adults came for our YA Hanging Deep talk on "Lifelong Christian Development". We were glad to have new friends visiting and started off with great conversations over a sumptious lunch with the ever-popular lemon chicken and kangkong belacan. There was even a special dessert!

Our speaker Jimmy Yun first introduced us to the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) by giving us a brief description of its history and current projects. He then anchored his talk by defining what a practicing Christian should be, and thereafter highlighted the two key perspectives that we should have to exercise our gifts so as to influence others towards God's purposes.

Using these perspectives, he makes the point that leadership does not only involve Christians who hold leadership positions in church, but also all Christians who can and choose to influence others for Christ. Jimmy's talk raised important issues that challenge us to examine our motives in our actions, as well as to apply our gifts with the right mindsets.

We ended with some time of praying and sharing, and managed even to finish all the remaining food from lunch!

An outline of "Lifelong Christian Development"

A Practicing Christian is a person
- with God given capacity, character and responsibility
- who is influencing people toward God's purposes

God's shaping of our lives includes events and experiences, time, and our responses. God's shaping produces developments in spiritual, ministerial and strategic areas of our lives.

Some principles to remember:
- When Christ calls Christians to ministry, he intends to develop them to their full potential.
- Each of us is responsible to continue developing in accordance with God's processing all our lives.
- Effective leaders view present ministry in terms of a lifetime perspective.

As a Kingdom builder (David vs. Absalom), we should possess two mindsets:
1. Service Mindset: Serving the sheep, Shepherding the flock
- obedience to inner work of the Spirit
- becoming aware of others' needs
- acceptance of assignments even at personal costs
- ownership of the gospel: genuine interest in others' welfare

2. Follower Mindset: Leading is a temporary assignment, following is a lifetime calling.
- we qualify for leadership by first being followers
- "follow" me is the basic command to all of us

Key values: loyalty to another
- serve another's cause
- teach another's truth
- accept another's results
- await another's time
- dream of another's glory

chase lemons, anyone?

who would have thought that apart from making lemon tea, lemon pies and lemon juice, lemons can also be rolled across the floor with chopsticks for a telematch game?!

on your left, george demonstrates how one can efficiently use a pair of chopsticks to move 2 lemons from one end of the room to the other.

unfortunately, unlike good ol' george, most of us ended up chasing the lemons as opposed to moving them across the room!

this was only one of the interesting games we played during our Young Adult Hanging Out time in May. apart from using lemons, other interesting items put to good use included....

well, actually, the pails were really meant for...

so as you can see, we had quite a good time chasing lemons, hugging pails and catching balls in pails while standing on chairs.

lastly, just to show you how much some people enjoyed themselves so much that they invited attention they didn't even know about...

Anchoring Deep through Kingdom Discipleship

As part of the Young Adult’s Ministry "Anchoring Deep" program, about 30 of us young adults gathered to hear from Mr David Lee share on "Kingdom’s Discipleship".

David, together with his family, began the session by leading us with a time of worship. As we sang praises to the Lord, we were reminded that worship is a vital part to a disciple of Jesus Christ. David’s insightful sharing and interesting stories were timely and refreshing reminders to us. We were truly blessed by David’s time with us. We ended the session with a time of sharing and praying, and of course, refreshments :)

An outline of "Kingdom Discipleship"
Luke 14: 25-27; 33

Discipleship is intentional.
It also means we must be a follower.
It is what you do to take on the character of Christ. It's also an 'inside' job, not just what we appear outwardly.

Who is God in your life?
Your view of God is very important, and it is the Bible that tells us what is the right view of God.

Requirements to be a disciple
1. Love God above everything else-including self (v26)
2. Die to ourselves; give up our old life to death (v27)
3. Give up everything you have for God

The blessing of God doesn't mean you are well spiritually. It doesn't say anything about you. It's about God who is generous, gracious.

We need to remember that God does not give suggestions but instructions.

On 19th February afternoon, we had our first 2006 Young Adults' Ministry Hanging Out event organized by Tzun's CG. It was a cozy gathering of about 40 young adults aged 21 to 35 years young. We were thrilled to have 9 newcomers, from church and friends of members.

A great way to kick off the event was to fill the stomachs with yummy food and orange fizzy drinks. A sumptuous meal it was-even the vegetables were nice, according to non-vege lovers! And as a reward for newcomers, their meals were on us.

With the meal over, we got down to knowing our group members better. We were asked to tear off as many or as little toilet paper sheets as we wanted. It was a real surprise when we found out the number of sheets we tore would be the number of things about ourselves we had to share! We got to know the greedy ones much better! :)

Have a great laugh over the second indoor game as aspiring artists had to replicate a picture (blindfolded!) with the help of their team mates! The bonus round was to incorporate the YA Ministry friendly but hard to draw anchor logo in their masterpieces.

Finally. The highlight of the event. Floor ball! We had the privilege of inviting Zhiyong's friend, Hwi Kiat, to teach us how to play this new sport. Hwi Kiat is actually Samuel Lim's classmate in NIE, currently training to be a PE teacher. Everyone enjoyed the sport although most were new to the game. According to Spencer, he was reminded of the "obscurely located muscles which (he) had not noticed in a while"!

To top all the fun and interactive time we had, everyone got to bring home a cute handphone holder.
